The Pilgrimage to the Republic of Altai by the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad Continues

On July 1, 2016, as part of a pilgrimage to the holy sites of Russia, descendants of Russian émigrés and clergymen visited the Gornoaltai Diocese. The 34 pilgrims hail from three countries: Australia, Canada and the USA, and are led by His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.

Metropolitan Hilarion and His Grace Bishop Kallistrat of Gornoaltai celebrated Divine Liturgy in the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” in the city of Chemal. Parts of the service were in the English and Altai languages. Afterwards, Vladyka Kallistrat addressed Metropolitan HIlarion and the pilgrims with a sermon, and gave them a painted icon of St Makary (Nevsky).

The pilgrims then traveled to the island of Patmos, where they visited the Church of St John the Theologian, the Church of St Makary of Altai and the bishop’s residence at St John the Theologian Skete.
