On Monday, February 26, 2018, His Eminence Metropolitan Hhilarion of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, headed funeral services at the Synodal Cathedral of Our Lady “of the Sign” in New York City for Prince Vladimir Kirillovich Galitzine, longtime warden of the cathedral and an eminent ecclesiastical and social figure. Metropolitan Hilarion was joined by His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada, and His Eminence Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America, along with clergyman of the cathedral and of the Eastern American Diocese and clergymen of the Chancery of the Synod of Bishops. The services were held in the presence of the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God "of the Sign,” as the cathedral choir sang under the direction of Peter Fekula, to a large gathering of mourners. Present at the service was Sergei Ovsyannikov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in New York, as well as representatives of Cossacks, Cadets, the Russian Nobility Association and Russian Scouts. The eulogy was delivered by Archbishop Peter. The prayer of absolution over the late Prince Galitzine was read by Metropolitan Hilarion. The burial then followed at the cemetery of Novo-Diveevo Convent of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Nanuet, NY, performed by Archbishop Gabriel. A memorial luncheon was later offered at Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY.
